How to See Color Like an Artist

Most people see color and think: that is blue. Artists see color and think: that is ultramarine with a touch of cadmium red.

Training your eye takes time. Start by naming colors precisely. Not blue. Cerulean. Not green. Olive. The more words you have, the more you see.

Color temperature is the next step. Warm colors advance. Cool colors recede. That is why sunsets feel close and mountains feel far. Your brain knows this instinctively. Artists use it deliberately.

Value is more important than color. A good composition in black and white works. A bad composition in beautiful colors does not. Get the values right first. Add color later.

Complementary colors create tension. Blue and orange. Red and green. Purple and yellow. Put them next to each other and they vibrate. That vibration is energy.

The best way to learn? Copy. Find a painting you love. Try to match the colors. You will fail. But you will learn more from failing than from reading ten books.
